Mary Dowser Reports: Cannibalism for the Middle Class

The indefatigably fragrant Mary Dowser, championship typist and world traveler has returned from her recent adventures in the American South and writes to us with her thoughts on a dystopian future.

I had planned on presenting a program entitled Dick and Jane’s Marxism for Pre-Schoolers. But really, if you have a little tot, the chances are that by the time they are middle aged they’ll be faced with a world we are only just beginning to imagine. This is, of course, is the real New Age, the consequence of the world of fossil fuel addiction, the Capitalist version of Heaven on Earth that we are now experiencing

I think the cannibal option makes a lot of sense. The world is going to need to rapidly downsize from about 9 or 10 billion people to about a few hundred million. Within a few years most of the world’s food will have been consumed. Human food options will present themselves.

Now I thought we would start with something simple. If you are going to survive you are going to have to harvest the weak. That would be an elderly relative or a extraneous child. If you are at this stage of the new world all the pets have already been eaten. I thought for the first program we’d start with the elderly relative. Slaughtering  a child for protein is just too stressful to think about isn’t it?

My contribution to the new world is great sauce to enjoy with Gramps or Nana. It’s a lovely sauce that I discovered in a wonderful cook book by Jack Denton Scott. Alas the book is out of print. I’ve made the sauce many times with excellent results. The last time was for Hugh Firmin, the Consul’s brother in the novel by Malcolm Lowry entitled Under the Volcano and with whom, as you will know, if you’ve kept up with my posts, I had a brief dalliance.

Unfortunately by the time the world goes through its mass cannibalism stage the ingredients for this recipe will not be available and must be imagined. Still when you’re choking down a little morsel of Gramps or Nana it might be of help to imagine how he or she might have tasted.

Salsa alla Meretrice

4 cups of Italian plum tomatoes
2 cloves of garlic minced
2 tbsp. Olive oil
8 anchovies minced
16 black olives pitted and chopped
1 tsp capers chopped
1 tsp dried sweet basil
¼ tsp crushed red pepper
¼ tsp oregano
½ tsp dried parsley

Sauté the garlic in oil over low heat until soft; add the anchovies. When the anchovies have broken apart, add the tomatoes, crush and simmer over low heat for about 10 minutes. Blend in the olives and the dry ingredients. Simmer until thickened.
